Describe yourself using a book title: Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg
What’s the best thing about being a librarian? For me, it is the thrill of “the hunt.” I love to find the perfect resource that answers a question or troubleshoot back to solve problems or locate that rare source.
What are you currently reading? A young adult series called the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones. This series is said to have influenced JK Rowling.
Describe ACL in three words: Enriching / Empowering / Enfolding
How do you (or How have you), as an academic librarian, contribute to your campus? I develop the collection in the areas of art, communication, education, and music and theater. I am in an average of 10 classes a semester doing bibliographic instruction and information literacy sessions. I spend an average of 12 hours a week at the reference desk. I serve and have served on a number of faculty committees and task-forces. I collaborate regularly with multiple departments on projects and events. I attend student performances and gallery shows regularly.
I began my career as a librarian . . . as a library student worker in high school. After doing it again for the majority of my college years, I started working professionally as acquisition staff. After 10 years of practical application, someone suggested I really should get the degree. I never wanted to be a “librarian,” for some odd reason, until I started my classes. The next thing I knew, I was in love!
What do you value about ACL? The friendships and opportunities for growth and service in every part of my life.
How were you introduced to ACL? Through work colleagues.
How are you or have you been involved in ACL? I’ve presented at the ACL Annual Conference numerous times in workshops, panels, poster session, and LASER talks. I’ve hosted 2 variety shows, I’ve been a part of 2 conference planning teams, and I’ve served on the Board of Directors as director-at-large and vice president.
Do you have any specific interests in the library world? I love/hate electronic resources and systems. I also enjoy children’s literature and that is my favorite area to develop our collection.
